German economist of the New Historical School. Professor at Leipzig University. He advocated a three-stage development theory of the closed family economy (no exchange), the urban economy (customer production), and the national economy (commodity production), centering on the length of the process by which goods travel from producers to consumers. He also contributed to journalism by founding the Institute of Journalism at Leipzig University. His main work is The Establishment of the National Economy.
