German economist of the New Historical School. Professor at Leipzig University. He advocated a three-stage development theory of the closed family economy (no exchange), the urban economy (customer production), and the national economy (commodity production), centering on the length of the process by which goods travel from producers to consumers. He also contributed to journalism by founding the Institute of Journalism at Leipzig University. His main work is The Establishment of the National Economy. ドイツの新歴史学派の経済学者。ライプチヒ大学教授。財が生産者から消費者に到達する過程の長短を軸に封鎖的家族経済（無交換），都市経済（顧客生産），国民経済（商品生産）の３段階発展説を唱えた。ライプチヒ大学に新聞研究所を創設するなど新聞学にも貢献。主著《国民経済の成立》。
