Normally, books are not printed one page at a time; eight pages for a quarto book, or 16 pages for an octavo book, are printed on the front and back of the printed sheet, and when the sheet is folded in a certain order, the pages line up in order. A whole sheet of paper folded in this way (printed) is called a quire, and this is the basic building block of a book. This can be seen by standing the book upright and looking at the spine from above, where there are many stacks of folded paper one on top of the other. Each of these stacks is a quire, and in the case of a thread-bound book, the folds in these stacks form the seams.
