Japanese: 折丁 - おりちょう（英語表記）quire; section; signature

Normally, books are not printed one page at a time; eight pages for a quarto book, or 16 pages for an octavo book, are printed on the front and back of the printed sheet, and when the sheet is folded in a certain order, the pages line up in order. A whole sheet of paper folded in this way (printed) is called a quire, and this is the basic building block of a book. This can be seen by standing the book upright and looking at the spine from above, where there are many stacks of folded paper one on top of the other. Each of these stacks is a quire, and in the case of a thread-bound book, the folds in these stacks form the seams. [See also] Folding symbols

本は通常，1ページ単位では刷らずに，四つ折り本であれば8ページ分，八つ折り本であれば16ページ分を印刷紙の表裏に刷り，一定の順序で折り畳むと，ぺージが順番に並ぶ．このようにして折り畳んだ（印刷）全紙を折丁といい，これが本の基本的な構成単位となる．その様子は本を立てて上から背の部分を見ると，二つ折りにした紙を重ねた束がいくつもできていることからわかる．この束一つ一つが折丁であり，糸とじ本のときはこの束の折り目がとじ目となっている．[参照項目] 折記号
