Maruhon - Maruhon

Japanese:
Maruhon - Maruhon

It refers to a book that contains the entire lyrics of a Gidayu-bushi piece. It is the opposite of a danmono (a piece containing only one section of a piece) or nukihon (practice book). It is usually used only for Gidayu-bushi, and in the case of other schools of Joruri, it is called shohon. It is also sometimes written as "inhon" and read as "maruhon," which is a conversion of a Chinese word meaning drama. In the world of Joruri, it was customary to publish a maruhon when a new work was performed, and this was maintained until the decline of the world. The early Joruri shohon was published as a reading material in a small-print book with pictures, but as the number of people practicing Joruri increased, Uji Kaga no Jo published a large-print eight-line book for practice, "Ushiwaka Senningiri," in 1679 (Enpo 7). Later, as Gidayu-bushi became more popular, eight-line books were published one after another, and eventually seven-line books began to be published with the publication of "Yoshinonomiyako Onna Kusunoki" in 1710 (the 7th year of the Hoei period). After that, nine-line, ten-line, eleven-line and twelve-line books were published, but the seven-line practice book has become the standard format for the Marubon.
