Vellozia (English spelling)

Japanese: ベロジア（英語表記）Vellozia

A slightly woody perennial plant of the Velosiaceae family that grows in dry regions. It has many linear, hard leaves clustered around a woody, bifurcated stem. Even after the leaves wither and fall off, the fibrous base covers the stem and persists. A single flower is borne at the terminal end of the flower stalk, with six petal-like tepals. It is a radially symmetrical, bisexual flower. There are about 90 species in South America, but none are particularly useful. The Velosiaceae family is a small group of monocotyledonous plants with about 300 species in four genera distributed in South America (dry regions mainly in Brazil) and Africa (dry regions in central and eastern Africa). It is closely related to the Apiaceae family and is a unique plant in the Liliales order.

乾燥地域に生育する，やや木質のベロジア科の多年草。木質化して二叉（にさ）状に分枝する茎に，線状で硬い葉を多数，群がりつける。葉が枯れおちても繊維質の基部が茎をおおい宿存する。花は花茎に1個が頂生してつき，花弁状に発達した6枚の花被片がある。放射相称形で両性花である。南アメリカに約90種が分布しているが，とくに有用なものはない。　ベロジア科は4属300種ほどが南アメリカ(ブラジルを中心とした乾燥地域)とアフリカ(中･東部の乾燥地域)に分布する単子葉植物の小群で，タシロイモ科に近縁で，ユリ目の特異な植物である。
