...Dutch interpreter and physician Narabayashi Chinzan (Eikyu) obtained a Dutch translation of A. Paré's Surgery, and learned about trepanation, lower limb amputation, vascular ligation, and other techniques, which he popularized in his own work. In 1787 (Tenmei 7), the Dutch version of the Encyclopedia Dictionnaire universel by Father Noël Chomel (1633-1712) was presented to Narabayashi Jubei by the head of the Dutch trading post, Tiching. Starting in 1811 (Bunka 8), Takahashi Sakuzaemon Kageyasu, Baba Sajuro, and Otsuki Gentaku began translating it, and by 1839 (Tenpo 10), the main part had been published as the 69-volume Kosei Shinpen (New Edition of Welfare). ...
