The title of bishop second only to Patriarch in the Monophysite Jacobite Church of Christianity. It comes from the Syriac māpryānā (meaning "one who ordains") and is called maphrian in English. It was established in the first half of the 7th century as a bishopric with jurisdiction over eastern regions such as Mesopotamia and Persia, and was originally called "Patriarch of the East." It was used as the title of the de facto head of the Jacobite Church from the 11th century, and remained in use until the end of the 19th century.
