[Born] 606, Mecca [Died] 633. Medina Daughter of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. Wife of the fourth caliph, Ali. Mother of the Shiite imams Hasan and Husayn. Her mother was Muhammad's first wife, Khadija, known as al-Ẓahrā' (the shining one). Muhammad had other daughters, but she was the only one who transmitted his lineage to posterity, and like the Christian Mary, countless legends were later created about her. During her father's lifetime, she and her husband, Ali, were the caretakers of Muhammad's family, and after her father's death, she claimed the lands conquered by the Islamic state, but was refused by the first caliph, Abu Bakr, and died shortly thereafter. Several Shiite dynasties claim to be descendants of Fatimids, but the Fatimid dynasty, which ruled from North Africa to Syria, is the most famous.
