1877‐1963 German insurance scholar. Born in Frankfurt, he studied at universities in Strasbourg, Göttingen, and London. He later contributed to insurance science as president of the German Insurance Society and editor of the Journal of Insurance Science. The "satisfaction of need theory," which he proposed in his major work, "On Insurance" (1905), which states that the purpose of insurance is to satisfy economic needs (necessities), remains one of the most influential theories of insurance even today. He also argued that the spirit of insurance is the phrase "one for all, all for one," which later became a famous phrase quoted by many insurance scholars.
