In retail businesses that handle a large number of products, it is especially important to classify products and manage them numerically. Companies that clearly define the units by which to classify and what to manage have clear classifications. Classification is one way of organizing, an expression of the store's individuality, a means of improving employee capabilities, a way to achieve detailed management, and a clue to help identify problems. Classification systems in retail are broadly divided into three types: merchandising classification, marketing classification, and management classification. Merchandising classification is a classification of products, divided into product groups, varieties, items, collective items, and absolute items. Marketing classification is a classification that explores customer needs, divided into classes and subclasses. Management classification is a management unit of sales and profits, a so-called organizational classification, divided into departments, sections, and divisions. When these three systems function well, the data obtained from POS can be used effectively.

多数の商品を扱う小売業では、特に、商品を分類し、数値管理をしていく必要がある。どの単位で分類するか、なにを管理するかに、明確に定められている企業は分類が明確になっている。分類は整理のひとつの手がかりであり、店の個性の表現であり、従業員の能力を高める手段であり、キメ細かな管理を実現する方法であり、問題見を助ける手がかり小売業における分類体系は、大きく3つに分かれる。マーチャンダイジング分類、マーケティング分類、管理分類の3つである。マーチャンダイジング分類は、商品の分類で品群・品種・品目・集合単品・絶対単品に区分される。マーケティング分類は顧客のニーズを探る分類でクラス・サブクラスに分類される。管理分類は売上・利益の管理単位、いわゆる組織分類で部門・課・係などに分類される。この3つが上手く機能することによってPOSで得られたデータが有効に利用できるようになる。
