Lyrics that mainly make use of segmental characteristics are intended to have a sound effect rather than express a specific meaning, and support the creation of music in ways such as mouth singing (such as shamisen) that imitates musical instruments, solmization (a method of reading music by voice by assigning one syllable to each note of a scale such as the Western Do-Re-Mi-Fa and the Indian Sa-Ri-Ga-Ma-Pa-Da-Ni), vowel singing, humming, scat singing, kakegoe, and hayashikotoba. When rhythmic features are emphasized, groups of syllables are regularly combined, as in the seven-five rhythm (waka, yokyoku, joruri, etc.) or the eight-six rhythm (ryuka), or rhythmic patterns of stress and length are emphasized, as in Western poetry, or couplets, syllables, and stanzas are formed using rhyming techniques such as alliteration, rhyme, and rhyme-singing, and the musical structure is often determined accordingly.
