Universal joint coupling

A shaft coupling that allows the angle at which two rotating shafts intersect to be freely changed within a certain range. (1) Non-constant velocity universal joint Also known as a Hooke's joint or Cardan type (shaft) joint. The ends of the shaft are forked, and two such joints with a cross metal fitting between them are used, ensuring a constant velocity via an intermediate shaft. (2) Constant velocity universal joint A typical example is the Bendix type (shaft) joint, which uses a four-ball mechanism. It results in constant velocity motion and no change in rotational force, but a bending load acts on the shaft.

回転する2軸の交わる角度をある範囲内で自由に変えられる軸継手。 (1) 不等速型自在継手　フック継手またはカルダン型 (軸) 継手と呼ばれるものがある。軸の端部を二叉にして，その間に十字形金具を入れた構造のものを2個用い，中間軸を介して等速になるようにする。 (2) 等速型自在継手　4個のボール機構を用いたベンディクス型 (軸) 継手が代表例。等速運動になり，回転力も変化しないが，軸には曲げ荷重が働く。
