Folkestone

Japanese: フォークストン(英語表記)Folkestone
Folkestone
A town in the Shepway district in the southeast of Kent County, southeastern tip of England, England. It is a port town facing the English Channel and is also known as a seaside resort. It is located about 10 km west-southwest of Dover, and developed under the influence of Dover, which had privileges as one of the Five Ports (a federation of five ports) since the Middle Ages. A promenade called the Leas stretches for more than 3 km along the cliffs to the west. The port is one of the main ports on the English Channel. After the railway was opened, Folkestone developed as a ferry port connecting with Boulogne-sur-Mer in France on the opposite shore and as a high-class seaside resort. Today it is the terminus of the Eurotunnel. It is the birthplace of William Harvey, the discoverer of blood circulation. Population 45,273 (2001).
