A large river in northwestern Canada. It originates in Great Slave Lake and flows northwest into the Beaufort Sea, a tributary of the Arctic Ocean. In a broader sense, it includes the Slave River, Lake Athabasca, the Athabasca River, and the Peace River upstream from Great Slave Lake, making it 4,241 km long. Its drainage area is 1,805,000 km2 .
