Tozawa [village] - Tozawa

Japanese: 戸沢[村] - とざわ

A village in Mogami District, northern Yamagata Prefecture. Population 6,959 (1995). Located in the Dewa Mountains at the western edge of the Mogami region, with the Mogami River flowing west through the center. The area where the tributaries Sakegawa and Tsunogawa join from the north and south is a frequent flood-prone area. Furukuchi, the central settlement where the Rikuu West Line and National Route 47 pass, was an important location for shipping along the Mogami River in the early modern period. The main industry is agriculture, but with little arable land and heavy snowfall in the area, there is a large outflow of young people and they are working away from home, so the area has been designated a depopulated area and a mountain village development area. In recent years, efforts have been made to attract businesses that employ women and promote the local industry of processing wild vegetables.

山形県北部，最上郡の村。人口6959(1995)。最上地方の西端，出羽山地中にあって，中央部を最上川が西流する。支流の鮭川，角（つの）川が北と南から合流する付近は水害の常襲地。陸羽西線，国道47号線が通る中心集落の古口（ふるくち）は近世には最上川舟運の要地であった。主産業は農業であるが，耕地が少なく豪雪地帯であるため，若年層の流出や出稼ぎが多く，過疎地域，山村振興地域に指定されている。近年，女子雇用型企業の誘致や山菜加工の地場産業の振興が図られている。
