…Positivism Movement While writers of the positivist period continued to be active into the 20th century, the Young Poland movement, which followed the trend of Western modernism, began in the 1890s. S. Przybyszewski and others advocated decadence and aestheticism (art for art's sake), but as the 20th century began, national and social ideas became mainstream against the backdrop of the rise of national and labor movements, and toward the end of the century, expressionist tendencies emerged in the works of Tadeusz Miciński (1873-1918) and others. This period was the heyday of not only novels by S. Zieromski and Nobel Prize-winning author WS Reymond, and plays by S. Wispianski, but also lyric poetry by Jan Kasprowicz (1873-1918), who wrote metaphysical poems, L. Stachov, who had strong classical tendencies, and B. Leszmian, a representative Polish symbolist. …
