An Indian tribe living mainly in Venezuela in South America, between 3° and 6° north latitude and 63° and 66° west longitude. Population: approximately 1,500. Their language belongs to the Caribbean family, which is widespread in this region. They call themselves Yekuana, and the name Maquilitale is an Arawak word meaning "people of the water", and they are famous for trading with neighboring tribes using waterways. Contact with white people dates back to the mid-18th century. The main occupations of the men are hunting and the women are slash-and-burn agriculture, with fishing being secondary. They often hunt with blowguns, a specialty of theirs, and also use bows and arrows when hunting large animals such as tapirs and deer. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
