A former town in Aira County in the northeastern part of Kagoshima Prefecture. Stretching from the southwestern slope of the Kirishima volcano to its foothills, most of the area is forested, where livestock are raised, and vegetables and tea are cultivated, as well as shiitake mushrooms. It occupies a major part of Kirishima-Yaku National Park (now Kirishima-Kinkowan National Park), and is home to hot springs such as Hayashida and Maruo in the Kirishima Onsen area, as well as Shinkawa Onsen, and is connected to the Hisatsu Line. In November 2005, it merged with Kokubu City, Aira County's Mizobe Town, Yokokawa Town, Kirishima Town, Hayato Town, and Fukuyama Town to become a city, Kirishima City. Area: 129.66 km2 . 鹿児島県北東部,姶良(あいら)郡の旧町。霧島火山の南西斜面から山麓に及び,大半は山林で,畜産,野菜・茶の栽培を行い,シイタケも産する。霧島屋久国立公園(現・霧島錦江湾国立公園)の主要部を占め,霧島温泉郷の林田,丸尾などの温泉,新川温泉郷があり,肥薩(ひさつ)線が通じる。2005年11月,国分市,姶良郡溝辺町,横川町,霧島町,隼人町,福山町と合併し市制,霧島市となる。129.66km2。9245人(2003)。
