A city located in the center of the Nile Delta in northern Egypt, roughly halfway between Tanta and Mansoura. Population 408,000 (1992). During the Coptic period it was called Dakla, and commercial activity began to flourish around the 13th century. Today it is a representative city in the grain-producing region, trading agricultural products, and spinning mills and agricultural product processing plants have been built, and it continues to develop as a center of light industry.
