1757‐1828 Duke of Saxe-Weimar (Grand Duke from 1815). An enlightened absolute monarch of a small German country. He invited Goethe to his post and appointed him as minister, and together they made the provincial city of Weimar the center of German spiritual culture. He is also known for having issued a constitution that recognized "freedom of the press" early on (1816) and for protecting the Burschenschaft movement that originated at the University of Jena within his domain. He was a strong-willed monarch who could not be confined to the framework of a small country. [Sakai Eihachiro] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
