A senior retainer of the Mito Domain. According to the family genealogy, he was a descendant of Emperor Senka, had the surname Tanji, and his descendants lived in Musashi and later took the name Nakayama. During the time of Nobuyoshi, he served Tokugawa Ieyasu, and in 1607 (Keicho 12), he was ordered by Ieyasu to be the guardian of his eleventh son, Yorifusa. When Yorifusa became the lord of Mito Domain in 1614, he became a senior retainer and was given a fief of 15,000 koku within the Mito domain. During the time of the 14th head, Nobuaki, under the Meiji Restoration government, he was placed on the throne of the domain along with the other three senior retainers in January 1868 (Meiji 1), and became independent as the Matsuoka Domain with a fief of 25,000 koku.
