Honcho Suikoden

Japanese:
Honcho Suikoden

A reading book from the late Edo period. Written by Takebe Ayatari. The first part is 10 volumes and 9 books, and the second part is 15 volumes and 15 books. The first part was published in 1773 (An'ei 2) by Inoue Chubei and others in Kyoto. The second part is handed down in a manuscript. Yoshino's Okina Umashine broke the boxwood branch given to him by a fairy into 100 pieces and let them float in the Yoshino River. These people later became Emi no Oshikatsu, Wake no Kiyomaro, Kose no Kanamaro and Kanaishi, Otomo no Yakamochi, and others, and rose up against the tyranny of the monk Dokyo. It was the first work to use the name "Suikoden" in the title, and set the precedent for the "Suikomono" (water-margin stories) craze in Japan, but in reality it is not based on "Suikoden" that much. However, it was praised by Kyokutei Bakin for having many characters, a wide setting, and a grandiose concept (Honcho Suikoden wo Yomu Narabi ni Hihyo). The writing style is pseudo-classical, reflecting the author's education in Japanese classics and incorporating contemporary customs, but it was left unfinished.
