Kushida River

Japanese:
Kushida River

A river that flows east through the center of Mie Prefecture and empties into Ise Bay. It is a first-class river. It originates in the western Takami Mountains and the northern Daiko Mountains on the border with Nara Prefecture, flows eastward, and after flowing into the Ise Plain, it changes direction to the northeast and empties into Ise Bay in the eastern part of Matsusaka City. It is 87 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 436 square kilometers. It is known as a river that runs along the Median Tectonic Line that crosses the Kii Peninsula. It cuts through mountains made of Nagatoro metamorphic rocks from the Paleozoic era, and creates the Kahadakyo gorge in the middle reaches. Water transportation was possible until the end of the early modern period, and there was a ferry between Izawa on the left bank of the middle reaches and Ouka on the opposite bank, and both prospered as inns. The Kishu Kaido road connecting Wakayama and Matsusaka crosses Takami Pass and runs along the river valley, and post stations developed as routes for visiting Ise Shrine and alternate attendance.
