An evergreen small herb of the fern family Polypteridaceae that grows in colonies on damp rocks in the mountains (illustration). The rhizome runs short and transverse, with shiny dark brown, thin, bristly scales. The base of the petiole is reddish brown and has the same scales as the rhizome. The upper part is light brown. The leaf surface is once pinnately branched, linear lanceolate, and large ones can reach 30 cm in length. The pinnae are triangular-oblong, with a round to obtuse head, almost straight on the underside, straight to slightly convex on the upper side, and notched. Sporangia are attached to the connecting veins, which are made up of 2 to 3 vein ends, and are covered with an insula. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
