1902‐79 Norwegian novelist and playwright. He portrayed the existential aspects of the human condition and always sought new forms of writing. His Pirandello-esque While We Wait (1938) was an experimental play about a man who fears to prove his existence. His Day of Liberation (1963) is an absurdist play about evil. His novel The Little Prince (1955) is a masterpiece about a boy who desires liberation from his mother, and I (1959) is the story of a man who seeks sin to confirm his identity.
