...The first book is on musical organization, the second on melodic structure, and the third book, entitled prakīrṇa (miscellaneous), but mainly on linguistic issues. The fourth book presents the theory of prabandha, a highly artistic style of song that developed at the time independently of theatre. The fifth book is on tala (meter), the sixth on instrumental techniques, and the seventh on dance techniques, all of which are systematically described.

...It is said to be the most mentally and physically demanding music in the pursuit of artistic excellence, and is solemn and reminiscent of religious ceremonies. Its founder is said to be Raja Mān Singh (1486-1525) of North India, but its origins can be found in prabandha (musical composition), which was popular around the 12th century. It is a large form consisting of four parts, the third of which is named dhruva (meaning "eternal"), and the compound word dhruva and pada, meaning "word," are pronounced in a Hindi style to become drupad.

...The Bhakti movement was first popularized in Tamil, where poets called Alwars sang in Tamil as an expression of passionate faith in the god Vishnu. These works are called prabandha. In Bengal, Chaitanya appeared and attracted many followers with his Kirtan songs, which were based on the love between Radha and Krishna.
