796 koro-861 An Egyptian-born Islamic mystic. After studying Islamic studies in Cairo, he traveled from Mecca to Damascus to study as a Sufi, and in his later years was temporarily imprisoned for preaching mystical thought to the masses. He recognized the importance of "love" for God, and believed that if one mastered the process of training with his guidance, one would reach the state of wajd (ecstasy) in which one could see the face of God. He called this realization ma'rifa (sensory knowledge), borrowing from the idea of gnosis (mystical knowledge), and made a great contribution to the theorization of mystical thought.
