A family of ferns in the order Fern. Widely distributed in tropical and subtropical regions around the world, but especially common in the Southern Hemisphere. Contains about 130 species in about 4 genera. They grow above ground, with long rhizomes bearing shoots, hairs, and scales. The leaves are pinnately compound, with a variety of branching patterns, as the midrachis and rachis stop growing at different positions depending on the species. The veins are free. The sporangia are located on the dorsal side of the veins and consist of several large sporangia. There is no capsule. The sporangia are completely annular and ripen to split longitudinally.
