Examiner

[Development of critical and literary magazines]
By targeting intellectuals as readers, the Western magazine world from the 18th to the 19th century entered a golden age of criticism and literature. In England, magazines such as D. Defoe's Review (1704-13), J. Swift's Examiner (1710-12), in which he wrote editorials for half a year, and J. Addison and R. Steele's Spectator (1711-12) continued to provide incisive analysis of political, diplomatic, and cultural issues. The government tried to suppress critical speech through measures such as the Stamp Duty of 1712, but journalism's momentum did not decline.
