Sadao Hosoi

A scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period, and a member of the court nobility. Commonly known as Tojuro, his pen names were Shoa and Shikado. Born into a merchant family in Edo, he disliked the family business and lived a quiet life beside Denpoin Temple in Asakusa, devoting himself to learning. He studied Japanese classics under Yamamoto Masaomi, a retainer of the Oinimikado family, and through this he learned about the court nobility of the Oinimikado family. He was most knowledgeable about the study of surnames, and wrote the 36-volume series "Seiji Ko." He also made notable achievements in research into the Tale of Utsubo, including "Utsubo Monogatari Tamamatsu," "Sora Monogatari Tamakin," and "Utsubo Monogatari Nia Sho," co-authored with Yamaoka Shunmei. He also collated the Onkodo edition of the Man'yoshu in his possession, which is now known as the "Hosoi edition of the Man'yoshu."

江戸後期の国学者,有職故実家。通称,藤十郎。号は昌阿,詞花堂。江戸の商家に生まれたが,家業を嫌い,浅草伝法院のかたわらに閑居して学問に親しんだ。大炊御門家の家臣山本正臣に国学を学び,その縁で大炊御門家の有職を学んだ。最も姓氏の学に詳しく,『姓氏考』36巻を著した。『宇津保物語玉松』『空物語玉琴』や山岡浚明との共著『宇津保物語二阿抄』など,『宇津保物語』研究においても顕著な業績をのこした。また,所蔵の『万葉集』に温古堂本をもって校合し,世に「細井本万葉集」と呼ばれる。
