…The first independent English dictionary was created by Robert Cawdrey in his English Alphabet (1604). During the 17th century, however, there were also dictionaries that included etymological explanations, albeit incomplete, in addition to the meanings of words, such as Thomas Blount's (1618-79) Glossary (1656). Thus, the 17th century can be said to be the age of difficult dictionaries, but the following 18th century was the age when English dictionaries were established in the true sense of the word. …
