A doctor and critic from the Meiji period. His pen name was Rokutei. He was born in Shingu, Wakayama Prefecture, as the second son of Masuhei and Kayo. He dropped out of Doshisha and travelled to the US in 1890. He studied medicine at Oregon State University. He returned to Japan and opened a practice in his hometown. He travelled to Singapore and India, where he studied infectious diseases, but at the same time turned his attention to social discrimination and became interested in socialism. After returning to Japan, he worked in Shingu as a doctor, and also took part in local activities to help the poor, such as setting up a commoner's restaurant. He also contributed to the local newspaper Muro Shinpo and the socialist newspaper Heimin Shimbun in Tokyo. As he was friends with Kotoku Shusui and others, he was implicated in the High Treason Incident (1910) and executed the following year. <Works> Complete Works of Oishi Seinosuke

明治時代の医師,評論家。号は禄亭。和歌山県新宮市に増平,かよの次男として生まれる。同志社を中退し,明治23(1890)年渡米。オレゴン州立大学で医学を学ぶ。いったん帰国し,郷里で開業。シンガポール,インドに渡り伝染病の研究のかたわら社会的差別に目を向け,社会主義に関心を持った。帰国後,新宮で医療活動に当たるとともに平民食堂を起こすなど貧民救済の地域活動を行った。また,地元紙『牟婁新報』や東京の社会主義新聞『平民新聞』に寄稿した。幸徳秋水らと親交があったことから大逆事件(1910)に連座させられ,翌年刑死。<著作>『大石誠之助全集』
