…The Francis wheel is a typical example of this type of reaction wheel, and over 80% of the water wheels in Japan are Francis wheels. The reaction wheel had already been invented in America around 1740, but it was extremely insufficient. It was later studied by the Frenchman Benoît Fourneyron (1802-67), who completed a practical reaction wheel in 1832. The Fourneyron wheel is the basis of modern water wheels, but it had drawbacks such as the fact that the inside of the runner was not always filled with water, because energy was exchanged when the radially outward flow passed through a rotating runner. …
