The Republic of the Five Races (English: Wu-zu gong-he)

Japanese: 五族共和 - ごぞくきょうわ（英語表記）Wu-zu gong-he

A slogan advocated during the Xinhai Revolution in China. The revolutionaries including Sun Yat-sen aimed to build a Republic of China on an equal footing for the five ethnic groups of Han, Manchu, Mongolian, Uighur, and Tibetan. The five-colored flag was based on this idea. Sun Yat-sen later came to believe in the Greater Hanism, which places the Han at the center and assimilates the other four ethnic groups. The Declaration of the First National Congress of the Kuomintang in January 1924 set out the goal of forming a unified state in which the various ethnic groups are freely united, based on respect for the right of self-determination of the ethnic minorities. However, today this claim is merely an acceptance of the autonomy of the ethnic minorities, and is denied in reality.
