A powerful clan in the Middle Ages based in Ukushima, Unomikuriya, Matsuura County, Hizen Province (present-day Uku Town, Kitamatsuura County, Nagasaki Prefecture). There are various theories about their origins, but none of them are conclusively proven. Uku Iemori, who is considered to be the founder, was the son of Taira Tadamori, and is said to have moved to Ukushima in 1187 (Bun'ei 3). Iemori is known to have handed over his residence, fields, and other land on Ukushima to the female Genji clan in 1233 (Tenpuku 1). During the Showa era (1312-17) of the Kamakura period, Ukuhi was appointed as an envoy for the Chinzei Tandai, and is thought to have held the status of a vassal.
