A Japanese classicist of the late Edo period. He was originally called Yanagimura Genta, but was also known as Asukai Fukasumi and Fujiwara Taro Masazumi. He was born on April 27, 1850 (according to one theory, the 20th) to a Tosa clan samurai family, and from the age of 25 he took over from his father and worked as a low-ranking samurai. He served as a tax collector, gatekeeper, hill guard, and grave keeper for the clan's lord. Although he had a small stipend and low status, his academic talent was recognized, and from the age of 31 in 1821 (Bunsei 4), he taught waka poetry and calligraphy to the clan of the lord, and also opened a private school to educate the children of the clan. Apart from becoming a disciple of Miyaji Nakae, a Confucian scholar of the clan, in his youth, he studied the Manyoshu almost entirely on his own, completing the 141-volume Manyoshu Kogi. This is a voluminous research work that mainly consists of 95 volumes of annotations on the main text of the Manyoshu, as well as five volumes of commentaries on pillow words, three volumes on people, five volumes on items, and six volumes on famous places. Although it sometimes offers far-fetched interpretations, it also cites a wide range of examples and shows original insights through thorough research, making it a work that can be considered the culmination of early modern Manyo studies. Other works include the anthology of poems and prose, Sansaishu.
