A general term for the colonies and protectorates in the western part of the African continent facing the Atlantic Ocean during the British colonial period. It currently includes Gambia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Nigeria. In 1900, these areas became British direct colonies or protectorates, but they were only governed unified for a short period of time, with governors appointed for each region. After World War II, Ghana (1957), Nigeria (1960), Sierra Leone (1961), and Gambia (1965) each achieved independence and became republics, but remained in the Commonwealth of Nations after independence. However, many countries, including Nigeria, are still plagued by civil wars caused by ethnic and religious conflicts.
