...The fourth head of the family, Sadanao, was known for his love of literature, and was taught by Enomoto Kikaku and Hattori Ransetsu, among others, and witnessed the development of Matsuyama culture during the Genroku period (1688-1704). In the mid-Edo period, Iyo haiku reached its zenith thanks to Kurita Chodo and Baekje Gyobun. The Kyoho famine of 1732 (17th year of the Kyoho period) caused great damage to the Matsuyama domain, and gave rise to the story of Gino Sakubei of Tsutsui Village (present Matsumae Town, Iyo District), who starved to death using wheat seeds as his pillow. ...
