A type of mineral. Also called perovskite. Chemical composition: CaTiO 3 . Orthorhombic crystal system. Usually rounded hexahedrons. Black, brown, or reddish brown. Transparent to opaque, with a diamond or metallic luster. Mohs hardness: 5.5. Specific gravity: 3.98-4.26. Colorless striations. Perovskite reacts with silica to produce titanite. Therefore, perovskite occurs as an accessory mineral in rocks that do not contain quartz, such as ultramafic and alkaline rocks. It also occurs in limestone in contact metamorphic zones. In Japan, it occurs in Nuka, Okayama Prefecture. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
