Furtwängler

Japanese: フルトウェングラー
Furtwängler
German conductor and composer. Born in Berlin to the famous archaeologist A. Furtwängler, he showed musical and artistic talent from an early age. He moved to the suburbs of Munich at the age of eight and received a privileged education from private tutors, learning music from composers J. Rheinberger (1839-1901) and M. von Schillings (1868-1933), as well as archaeologist R. Curtius and sculptor A. von Hildebrand. While composing, he became the choral conductor of the Breslau Municipal Theater at the age of 20, and thereafter served as conductor and music director at opera houses throughout Germany. In 1922, he succeeded Nikisch as the principal conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 1927 he also became the principal conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1933, he became music director of the Berlin State Opera. After World War II, he was temporarily banished from the music world for collaborating with the Nazis, but thanks to the efforts of Menuhin and others, he returned in 1947. He continued to be active in Berlin, Vienna, and the Bayreuth Festival. As a composer, he adopted a late romantic style and left behind four symphonies (1903-1954), including an early work without numbering. He also wrote many works. → Karajan / Munch / B.
