A perennial plant of the Amaranthaceae family (APG classification: Amaranthaceae). Native to Brazil. When it was introduced to Japan, it was mistakenly believed to be a plant of the Achyranthes genus, and is therefore sometimes called Achyranthes. The stem is upright, 5-15 cm tall, and branches well from the base. There are two types of leaves, a deep red and yellow, which are used to create geometric patterns in autumn flower beds. The flowers are stalkless, with 1-3 small, inconspicuous flowers growing in a head-like shape at the top. It is propagated by cuttings, which are taken from May to July to produce seedlings, which are then densely planted in flower beds in September.
