Wakefield
A city in the southeast of West Yorkshire, north-central England, England. It is part of the Wakefield district, including the surrounding area. It is located about 55 km northeast of Manchester, at the eastern foot of the Pennines, and faces the River Calder. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), a land survey by William I, and a wool market was established there around 1308. It later developed into a textile centre. The textile industry is still thriving today, but food processing, machinery and metalworking industries have also developed. It is home to towns such as Ossett, Normanton and Castleford, and is connected to the Humber River by the Aire and Calder Canal. District area: 333 km2 . District population: 315,172 (2001). Urban population: 76,886 (2001).

[Died] May 16, 1862, Wellington, New Zealand. British politician. After his experience of imprisonment, he started a movement to reform the criminal law. He advocated for making southern Australia a place of residence for free colonists, not convicts, and also advocated for the colonization of New Zealand. In 1839, he was one of the planners of the Durham Report on Canada.
