Japanese: 奥田頼杖 - おくだ・らいじょう
Okuda Yorijō
Year of death: 5th August 1849 (21st September 1849)
Year of birth: Unknown. A Shingaku scholar from the end of the Edo period. His name was Zairyu, and he was commonly known as Juta. He was nicknamed Yorizō because he had a weak leg and used a walking stick. He was born in Kusaka Village, Miyoshi County, Bingo Province (Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture) as the son of Hiroshima feudal lord Okuda Zensuke. He studied Shingaku under Kamikawa Kisui in Kyoto, and became the first head of Kanshinsha, which was established in Hiroshima around Bunka 11 (1814). Yorizō inherited Kisui's theory of Shingaku, which was based on Neo-Confucianism, and regarded Shingaku as an ethical movement, striving to educate the people through Taoist teachings. He was invited not only to Hiroshima, but also to Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo, where he gave lectures and influenced many people, but especially from Bunsei 8 (1825) onwards, he frequently toured the territory of the Hagi domain (Yamaguchi Prefecture), leaving a significant mark on the education of the people of the territory. <Works> "Stories of Shingaku Do" <References> Ishikawa Ken "A Study of the History of Sekimon Shingaku"
