Mechanical pencil - Sharp Penshiru

A writing instrument with a replaceable lead, in which the lead inside the barrel is inserted and removed mechanically. A single-action retractable pencil was made in England in 1822, but the first was made and sold in 1838 by American Kieran under the name "Eversharp". This is where the name Sharp originated. It was imported to Japan in 1877 (Meiji 10). The first domestically produced pencil was the "Hayakawa-style retractable pencil" manufactured in 1914 (Taisho 3) by Hayakawa Tokuji (founder of Sharp Corporation). Traditionally, it used the same lead as a pencil, but in 1962 (Showa 37), a thin yet strong lead known as a synthetic resin lead was developed for the first time in Japan, and it became a commonly used practical item.

They are broadly classified into knock type (spring-pushing type), rotary type, and drop type. The most common type is the knock type, where a spring is activated by operating a part of the main body, pushing out and fixing the lead. The main types include the knob-knock type, where a knob at the head of the barrel is operated, the side-knock type, where a knob in the center of the barrel is operated, the cap-sliding type, where the lead is advanced by sliding the cap, and the double-knock type, where both the writing part and the lead can be inserted and removed by knocking, and many of them have a spare lead that follows automatically. The rotary type inserts and removes the lead through a spiral pipe, and there are the single-spiral type, the cross-spiral type (two-color type), and the tip-screw type. The drop type inserts and fixes the lead at an appropriate length, and is called a red holder or drop pencil, and is used for thick-leaded drafting. Recently, a non-stop type has also been developed in which the lead advances automatically. There are four common lead diameters: 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9 mm, and hardness ranges from 2B to 4H, with 0.5 mm leads being the most common.

機械的な手法によって軸内の鉛芯(しん)を出し入れする、替芯式の筆記具。1822年にイギリスで単動式の繰り出し鉛筆がつくられたが、1838年にアメリカのキーランが「エバーシャープ」の名で製作し、販売したのが最初である。シャープの名はここからおこっている。日本へは1877年（明治10）に輸入された。国産では、1914年（大正3）に早川徳次（シャープ（株）の創業者）が、「早川式繰出し鉛筆」を製造したのが最初である。従来は鉛筆と同じ芯が用いられていたが、1962年（昭和37）に日本で初めて合成樹脂芯とよばれる、細くてしかも強い芯が開発されたことにより、実用品として一般に定着した。

　構造には大別してノック式（ばね押し出し式）、回転式、ドロップ式がある。一般的なのはノック式で、本体の一部を操作することによりばねが発動し、芯が押し出されて固定される方式。おもなものに、軸頭のノブを操作するノブノック式、軸の中央部にあるノブを操作するサイドノック式、キャップをスライドさせることにより芯を繰り出すキャップスライド式、筆記部と芯の両方の出し入れをノック操作でできるダブルノック式などがあり、予備芯が自動的に追従してくるものが多い。回転式は、らせんパイプを伝わって芯を出し入れするもので、単らせん式、交差らせん式（二色式）、先回し式がある。ドロップ式は、芯を適当な長さに出して固定する方式で、レッドホルダーとかドロップペンシルとよばれ、太芯の製図用である。最近では自動的に芯が出てくるノンストップ方式もある。芯径は0.3、0.5、0.7、0.9ミリメートルの4種類が一般的で、硬度は2B～4Hまであり、0.5ミリ芯にその種類が多い。
