?-1342 Pope. Reigned 1334-42. Born into a poor family in the Languedoc region of southern France, he entered the Cistercian monastery of Bourbonne as a young man, and later moved to the Abbey of Fontfloeade. He studied theology in Paris, and served as abbot in 1311, bishop of Pamiers in 1317, and of Mirepoix in 1326. He became a cardinal in 1327, and the third Pope of Avignon in 1334. He worked to reform the church and monasteries, and encouraged scholarship, and many of his policies were later adopted by the Council of Trent, but he was politically compromising and achieved little.
