…He was a Roman soldier from Sauria in Pannonia, but while stationed in Amiens in 355, he met Jesus dressed as a poor man and became an ascetic after that encounter. He became a priest under Hilarius, Bishop of Poitiers, and fought against the Arian forces in Milan and Illyricum. Around 360, he founded the monastery of Ligugé, said to be the first monastery in Gaul, near Poitiers. In 372, when he became Bishop of Tours, he established the monastery of Marmoutier, where he trained priests and preached, and his faith spread to northeastern Gaul. …
