Ancient Egyptian deity. Originating from Sudan (or Somalia), he became widely worshipped during the Middle Kingdom. He appeased the gods by dancing and playing the harp and drums. He was also the patron deity of marriage and childbirth; in the temple of Deir el-Bahari he is depicted attending the birth of a queen. He was also the deity in charge of makeup and clothing, and of dreams. He was also worshipped as a guardian against evil spirits, harmful animals (such as crocodiles and snakes), and injuries. He is often depicted as a grotesque, small man with a huge head and an animal-like appearance.
