Pegu Dynasty - Pegu-cho (English spelling)
A Burmese kingdom established by the Mon people from the 13th to 18th centuries. It is rich in Buddhist ruins. The Mon people, who migrated south from southern China, traveled down the Thanlwin and Sittang rivers before Christ, and established Theravada Buddhist culture in three places: Thaton, Kosma, and Pegu. At the end of the 13th century, the Pegu dynasty tried to revive Mon culture, interacted with the Sukhothai dynasty of Thailand, and continued to fight against the Ayutthaya dynasty in the 14th century. In the 15th century, they repelled the southward invasion of the Aba dynasty, and exported surplus agricultural products to Malacca by sea, continuing to prosper economically and culturally. In the mid-18th century, they moved north and destroyed the Taungoo dynasty, but soon came under the control of the Konbaung dynasty to the north and gradually lost their power. The Shwedagon Pagoda, the Great Buddha, and a reclining Buddha remain.
