A seaport city in the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France. Population 44,000 (1990). Facing the Straits of Dover, it is the fishing port with the largest catch volume in France, and the seafood processing industry is also thriving. As a passenger port, it is second only to Calais, and is connected to the United Kingdom on the opposite shore by hovercraft. The metropolitan area has a population of about 100,000, and is home to industries such as steel. The uptown area, which escaped damage during World War II, is home to the 13th century city walls and the 19th century Notre Dame Cathedral.
