A strategic location in the Middle Ages in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. It is said to have originated from the fact that it was Kitanosho of Asuwa Mikuriya. Located in the center of the Fukui Plain, it was already recorded in the Taiheiki as one of the Seven Castles of Asuwa. During the Sengoku period, the Asakura clan stationed their clan here, which controlled the Hokuriku Kaido, and managed their territory. When the Asakura clan was destroyed in 1573 (Tensho 1), Oda Nobunaga stationed Kinoshita Sukehisa, Akechi Mitsuhide, and Tsuda Motoyoshi as the Kitanosho Trio, and in 1575 stationed Shibata Katsuie as his base for managing the Hokuriku region. 福井県福井市の中世要衝地。足羽(あすわ)御厨の北庄であったことに由来するという。福井平野の中央に位置し,すでに《太平記》に足羽七城の一つとして記されている。戦国時代,朝倉氏は北陸街道を扼(やく)するこの地に一族を配置し,領国経営を進めた。1573年(天正1)朝倉氏が滅亡すると織田信長は北ノ庄三人衆として木下祐久,明智光秀,津田元嘉を配し,75年には柴田勝家を配置して北陸経営の拠点とした。勝家は九重の天守をもつ北ノ庄城を築くが,83年豊臣秀吉に滅ぼされる。
