A strategic location in the Middle Ages in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. It is said to have originated from the fact that it was Kitanosho of Asuwa Mikuriya. Located in the center of the Fukui Plain, it was already recorded in the Taiheiki as one of the Seven Castles of Asuwa. During the Sengoku period, the Asakura clan stationed their clan here, which controlled the Hokuriku Kaido, and managed their territory. When the Asakura clan was destroyed in 1573 (Tensho 1), Oda Nobunaga stationed Kinoshita Sukehisa, Akechi Mitsuhide, and Tsuda Motoyoshi as the Kitanosho Trio, and in 1575 stationed Shibata Katsuie as his base for managing the Hokuriku region. Katsuie built Kitanosho Castle with its Kokonoe castle tower, but it was destroyed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
