Any of the mammals belonging to the marsupial order Caenolestidae family. Covered in soft brown-gray fur, they resemble small brown rats. They have a pointed snout like a shrew and a thick tail with sparse hair at the base. Their body is gray to brown, and their tail is dark brown. The incisors on their lower jaw are long and protrude forward. They have five fingers on their hands and feet. They have no brood pouches, but have four papillae on their ventral surface. Body length is 11-13.5 cm, tail length 11.5-12.5 cm. They live in the moist forests along the Andes Mountains from southern Venezuela to Ecuador and Colombia. 有袋目ケノレステス科Caenolestidaeに属する哺乳類の総称。茶色みを帯びた灰色の柔らかな毛に覆われた姿が小さなドブネズミに似ている。鼻先はトガリネズミのようにとがり,尾は根もとが太くまばらに毛が生えるのが特徴。体色は灰色ないし茶色,尾は暗茶色。下あごの門歯は長く前方に突出する。手足には5本の指がある。育児囊はなく腹面に4個の乳頭をもつ。体長11~13.5cm,尾長11.5~12.5cm。ベネズエラ南部からエクアドル,コロンビアにかけての,アンデス山脈に沿った湿潤な森林に生息する。
